The easiest way to see a civilization’s wishes and desires is to scan the front covers of its magazines. Everything one needs to know is there to see on any newsstand across the nation.
Using retail display strategies and sales ephemera, New York artist Josephine Meckseper is known for transforming art galleries into boutiques of cultural critique: arenas where aesthetics merge with ideologies, politics, and lifestyle axioms. Adapting strategies of the hard-sell, Meckseper’s work delves deep into facets of American consumer society and its relationship to the larger, expanding global economy.
Each of the twelve versions of Untitled (Magazines) is different from the rest. In a sense, it’s an edition featuring twelve unique works. Each piece contains twelve magazines from a different genre—from lifestyle glossies to categories such as Religion, Automotive, Weaponry (illustrated), and others. A complete list, along with their accompanying colors, will follow shortly.
Josephine Meckseper received her MFA from the California Institute of Art. Her works have been included in international biennials such as the Second Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art (2007); Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville (2006); and the Whitney Biennial (2006 and 2010). She has had solo exhibitions at the Migros Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Zurich; the Blaffer Gallery/Art Museum of the University of Houston, (2009) and a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (2007). Her work was featured at MoMA in New Photography in 2008 and the Guggenheim Museum in Contemplating the Void in 2009, both in New York. A solo exhibition of her work will be held at the FLAG Art Foundation in New York in 2011.
Meckseper is represented by Elizabeth Dee in New York, Timothy Taylor Gallery in London, ARNDT in Berlin and Galerie Reinhard Hauff in Stuttgart.
